Free weekends/weeks appear quite often, and for bigger titles aswell, like it was for Fallout 4, Doom, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, Killing Floor 2 and others – you just have to check the Steam news (and this site also) for the heads-up on these “free time” days. =)
